Grab your clubs, hop on the R train and head to Dyker Beach Golf Course. The well-maintained course boasts 18-holes, rolling fairways, and views of the Verrazano Bridge peeking out behind the 7th hole. It’s also easy to get to by car; the course is right off the BQE.
Next Saturday, October 24 a historical reenactment of questionable accuracy is taking New York by storm: the Marshmallow Civil War. You can participate by showing up at 3:00 pm on the dot at Brooklyn Banks, the park in Manhattan under the Brooklyn Bridge. The battle is BYO marshmallows and weaponry.
Ever dreamed of opening your own pizzeria? The two amateur pizza-makers at Saraghina, Edoardo Mantelli and Massimiliano Nanni, had a passion for pizza, but no expertise. Mantelli asked friend and pizza-master Michele Iuliano (of Luzzo’s) to teach him the ways. And he learned exceptionally well. The result is something special: crisp but soft dough covered in fresh tomato sauces and oozing mozzarella (not to mention the uber-cool restaurant space). White-washed walls, over-sized posters, and funky glass collections fill the ramshackle building’s indoor space.
Hang with Stone Barn’s cows, wild turkeys, and roaming pigs. Go for a hike through neatly marked trails. Take in gorgeous views of the Hudson. Explore the shimmering Swan Lake, then head back to the farm for some gourmet food at the Blue Hill Bakery.
Opened by fans of the famed Bay Area taco joint, Gordo Taqueria, Dos Toros is as close as you’ll come to a California-quality tacos and burritos in Manhattan. The space is small: there are a few stools, and the line can stretch outside. But the tacos, burritos, and quesadillas are worth the wait
On Wednesday nights, head to the Cameo in Williamsburg for what NY Mag has called the city’s best stand up comedy. The show is free; there are no pesky drink minimums, and big-name comedians frequently make unannounced appearances (recent cameos include Zach Galifianakis, Todd Barry, and Aziz Ansari).
Escape for a day in nature in Cold Spring, NY. Hike to the top of Mt. Taurus for outstanding views of the Hudson River and valley, get lunch in town and stroll historic main street stopping into the well-priced antique shops before the scenic train ride home.
Red Hook, legendary former haunt of stevedores and longshoremen (the setting of the classic “On the Waterfront”) has some of the most satisfying eats in all of Kings County. Head to the Red Hook Lobster Pound for some savory last morsels of summer, followed by sweet baked treats at Baked. Next stop is Sixpoint Craft Ales for a tour of the brewery and endless samples before hopping the Ikea ferry to take in views of the harbor on the way home.
