Grab your clubs, hop on the R train and head to Dyker Beach Golf Course. The well-maintained course boasts 18-holes, rolling fairways, and views of the Verrazano Bridge peeking out behind the 7th hole. It’s also easy to get to by car; the course is right off the BQE.
Hang with Stone Barn’s cows, wild turkeys, and roaming pigs. Go for a hike through neatly marked trails. Take in gorgeous views of the Hudson. Explore the shimmering Swan Lake, then head back to the farm for some gourmet food at the Blue Hill Bakery.
Escape for a day in nature in Cold Spring, NY. Hike to the top of Mt. Taurus for outstanding views of the Hudson River and valley, get lunch in town and stroll historic main street stopping into the well-priced antique shops before the scenic train ride home.
New Paltz is the jumping off point for one of the best rock climbing areas in North America – the Shawangunk Mountains, affectionately referred to as the Gunks. The climbing is great for all levels. If you’re a beginner, you can easily hire a guide to lead you up the rock-face, while experienced climbers lead their own climbs up the granite cliffs. The mountains are great for hikes, too. For bikers, there are 15 miles of bike trails running along an old rail path near the Wallkill River. And there’s plenty of great food in the quaint (kinda hippie-dippy) town.
Rent a bike on the west side and cruise up the Hudson River Greenway, over the George Washington Bridge, and into the wilds of New Jersey. Ride along the water the whole time, and take in great views of the river and the Manhattan skyline. Stop at a charming shack for lunch along the water at the Englewood Boat Basin in New Jersey. Ride as far as you want up the Henry Hudson Drive before heading back to the city.
Take the LIRR out to Montauk for a shot at your best Johhny Utah imitation. Miss the summer Hamptons crowds and catch the tail end of hurricane season on some killer waves. Bring yourself and your friends — the Sunset Surf Shack will set you up with a board and wetsuit. After tuckering yourself out, head to Joni’s for a fresh burrito or sandwich and smoothie. Be sure to tell your boss on Monday “I caught my first tube … Sir.”
Check out the city from a boat, for free. It’s not quite as cool as this one, but it’s a kayak trip or paddle boarding trip, in the middle of the Hudson or East Rivers. Hit the water in a single or double person kayak for free or sign up for paid lessons. Paddle out in the evening to catch the sunset or plan it for a weekend day.
Channel your inner kid this weekend with a trip to Coney Island. Take a spin on the ferris wheel, ride the Cyclone, and stroll down the beach. Chow down on a hot dog at at the original Nathan’s, a Neapolitan pizza at Totonno’s, or clams from Ruby’s. Top it all off with beers and fireworks on the boardwalk.
