Grab your clubs, hop on the R train and head to Dyker Beach Golf Course. The well-maintained course boasts 18-holes, rolling fairways, and views of the Verrazano Bridge peeking out behind the 7th hole. It’s also easy to get to by car; the course is right off the BQE.

Book a Tee-Time: New York City golfers can book a tee-time online for the 18 holes or 9 holes up to 10 days in advance. Reservations cost $4.00 to book online, and you must prove your eligibility for the resident rate at the course.

Beware of Back-Breaking Sundays: Dyker rotates its pins on a regular basis to minimize the wear and tear on the course. On Sundays, the course moves the pins to the most difficult part of the greens, making putting either infuriating or extra-satisfying.

Tip: The course sometimes offers special rates. Check in online to see if there anything is available before you go.

Getting there: The course is located at 86th St. & 7th Avenue. Take the R train to 86th Street and walk southeast to get to the course entrance.

Next Saturday, October 24 a historical reenactment of questionable accuracy is taking New York by storm: the Marshmallow Civil War. You can participate by showing up at 3:00 pm on the dot at Brooklyn Banks, the park is in Manhattan under the Brooklyn Bridge. The battle is BYO marshmallows and weaponry.

How to Participate: Combatants must bring their own bag of (just one) of marshmallows. Teams will be divided at the meeting point into Yellow and Red. Checkhere for more info.

Weaponry: Anything goes as long as you are shooting marshmallows. For instructions on how to make your own pneumatic cannon for launching … marshmallows, click here. You likely can find all components at your local hardware store.

For the Lazies: You can (literally) buy a marshmallow shooter on Amazon.

Ever dreamed of opening your own pizzeria? The two amateur pizza-makers at Saraghina, Edoardo Mantelli and Massimiliano Nanni, had a passion for pizza, but no expertise. Mantelli asked friend and pizza-master Michele Iuliano (of Luzzo’s) to teach him the ways. And he learned exceptionally well. The result is something special: crisp but soft dough covered in fresh tomato sauces and oozing mozzarella (not to mention the uber-cool restaurant space). White-washed walls, over-sized posters, and funky glass collections fill the ramshackle building’s indoor space.

What to Get: Pizza of course. Check out the full menu here.

Fun Fact: Mantelli co-owns the clothing brand Tocca.

The Pizza Man’s Hours: The pizza guy doesn’t arrive until noon on the weekends. But Saraghina serves a mean French Toast for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays if you get there early (the restaurant opens at 10 am on the weekends though the website says that it opens at 12 pm). The restaurant is open Monday – Sunday 6 pm – 11 pm and for breakfast and lunch 10 am – 5 pm Monday – Friday.

Where: 435 Halsey St. Take the A/C to Utica Ave and walk.

Hang with Stone Barn’s cows, wild turkeys, and roaming pigs. Go for a hike through neatly marked trails. Take in gorgeous views of the Hudson. Explore the shimmering Swan Lake, then head back to the farm for some gourmet food at the Blue Hill Bakery.

What to do: Take a hike through the Rockefeller State Park Preserve. There are no maps of the trails provided at Stone Barns so be sure to print one out before you go. Stone Barns does provide maps of its property, and marks the trailhead for the Brook Trail. Walk through the vegetable garden (away from the main house and in the opposite direction of the parking lots) to find the trails. Take the Brook Trail to Swan Lake. If you’re feeling really energetic, tack on a stroll through the Overlook Loop and take in views of the Hudson.

Food, Glorious Food: The cafe is small, but absolutely excellent. Try their fresh, open-faced sandwiches with meats from the farm, with a side of home-grown vegetables. We had an open-faced roast beef sandwich, beet salad, and a whole wheat baguette stuffed with seasonal veggies (the perfect measure of salty, crisp and fluffy bread).

Sweets: The rotation of baked goods changes, but if they have the chocolate chip cookies, get one. They are the perfect measure of richness: somehow incredibly tasty but without the heavy greasiness of other exceptional cookies. Sit outside on the patio at a picnic table in the sun and enjoy. The cafe is open from 10:30 – 4:30, Wednesday – Sunday. On the weekends, the line can get long after 1 pm so plan accordingly – either go early or late.

Where: Blue Hill at Stone Barns (630 Bedford Road, Tarrytown, NY).

Train: Take Metro North from Grand Central to Tarrytown on the Hudson line (around 35 minutes). Catch a cab (waiting at the Tarrytown train station) and ride about 10 minutes to the farm.

Car: The drive takes 45 minutes from the city.

Opened by fans of the famed Bay Area taco joint, Gordo Taqueria, Dos Toros is as close as you’ll come to a California-quality tacos and burritos in Manhattan. The space is small: there are a few stools, and the line can stretch outside. But the tacos, burritos, and quesadillas are worth the wait.

Where: 137 Fourth Ave (13th St), right off of Union Square. Take the N/R/Q, L, 4/5/6 to Union Square.

“Marquee Player”: An Always Hungry investigation concluded that the “Dos Toros quesadilla reigns supreme. Structure, overall quality, individual flavors, component distribution, texture – it’s the whole package.”

Short But Sweet: The short menu is populated with only two other items: tacos and burritos. Get the juicy carnitas tacos or the flavorful carne asada burrito. Make sure to use all of the toppings. They are home-made and pack a punch.

Bay-Area Greenies: Dos Toros sources all of its ingredients from sustainable farms. Chickens hail from a farm that feeds the birds a vegetarian only diet. Pinto beans are grown organically. Utensils, cups, and napkins are biodegradable. And their electricity comes from only renewable energy sources.

Escape for a day in nature in Cold Spring, NY. Hike to the top of Mt. Taurus for outstanding views of the Hudson River and valley, get lunch in town and stroll historic main street stopping into the well-priced antique shops before the scenic train ride home.

What to eat:
Breakfast: If you arrive early enough for breakfast, swing through the Village Cafe for fresh blueberry pancakes or try the breakfast burrito, a local favorite stuffed with eggs, bacon, spinach, cheese, potatoes and more.

Lunch: If you didn’t pack a lunch, make a pit stop at the Village Deli on Main Street for sandwiches and drinks to bring with you for a mountain top picnic. Or, if you’d prefer to have lunch in town there’s great pizzeria next door to the deli.

Hit the trail: To get to the trailhead, follow Market Street north from the train station towards Main Street. Hang a right on Main Street and continue until you hit Morris Ave. Take a left, and keep an eye out for the Little Stony Point Hudson Highlands State Park. The trail begins on the right hand side by the parking lot and ‘Trail Maps’ sign. There are many hikes (and you can pick up a trail map at the parking lot). Check out a good description of one of the hikes, a 7.5 mile loop, here. Make sure to hike to the top: there are sweeping views of Bear Mountain, the Hudson River, and Harriman State Park.

Antiques: Don’t miss the Antique Stores on Main Street. They sell all sorts of wild stuff for great prices that you won’t stumble upon in the city.

Getting there: Take Metro North from Grand Central to the Cold Spring station. Walk or take a taxi to the trailhead (about a mile from the train station). Train tickets range from $22.50 to $30 depending on time of day and run approximately every hour.
