New Paltz is the jumping off point for one of the best rock climbing areas in North America – the Shawangunk Mountains, affectionately referred to as the Gunks. The climbing is great for all levels. If you’re a beginner, you can easily hire a guide to lead you up the rock-face, while experienced climbers lead their own climbs up the granite cliffs. The mountains are great for hikes, too. For bikers, there are 15 miles of bike trails running along an old rail path near the Wallkill River. And there’s plenty of great food in the quaint (kinda hippie-dippy) town.
Head to the New Yorker Festival from October 1st to 3rd to catch a worthy range of discussions and performances by artists, actors and writers including Alec Baldwin, Steve Carell, Regina Spektor, Malcom Gladwell, and a panel featuring the SNL cast.
A juicy burger, slathered with Heinz 57, and a choice of Gulden’s or French mustard, topped with a tomato, lettuce and American cheese (for $5.50). Accompanied by a beer and fries, on classic red and white checked table cloths. This is one tasty burger. Maybe sneak in a milkshake to really party like it’s 1959.
Rent a bike on the west side and cruise up the Hudson River Greenway, over the George Washington Bridge, and into the wilds of New Jersey. Ride along the water the whole time, and take in great views of the river and the Manhattan skyline. Stop at a charming shack for lunch along the water at the Englewood Boat Basin in New Jersey. Ride as far as you want up the Henry Hudson Drive before heading back to the city.
Head to Habana Outpost in Fort Greene for an end-of-summer evening with delicous cuban sadwiches, grilled corn, strong frozen drinks and free movies under the stars. They show a different movie every Sunday through October. This weekend it’s Kings of New York on September 20th.
Alidoro serves delicious Italian sandwiches on a selection of breads. Also known for its salty previous owner, the stop still keeps traces of his tough love. Like there’s a sign by the counter that lists 39 things not to ask for including, half-sandwiches, soup, chips, pickles, mayo utensils, or water. But don’t let the gruffness throw you. The sandwiches are the best in Soho, and give the rest of the city’s eateries a run for their money. But get ready to wait: there generally is a long line and only two sandwich makers, who labor lovingly (but slowly) over each order. Get the Pinnochio, snag a seat at one of the two tables or order take out.
Take the LIRR out to Montauk for a shot at your best Johhny Utah imitation. Miss the summer Hamptons crowds and catch the tail end of hurricane season on some killer waves. Bring yourself and your friends — the Sunset Surf Shack will set you up with a board and wetsuit. After tuckering yourself out, head to Joni’s for a fresh burrito or sandwich and smoothie. Be sure to tell your boss on Monday “I caught my first tube … Sir.”
Peaches HotHouse serves up some delicious, down-home cooking: fried chicken, waffles, grits, black-eyed peas, fried green tomatoes, and more. Eat with your fingers and wash it down with a tall glass of home made lemonade.
