Hang with Stone Barn’s cows, wild turkeys, and roaming pigs. Go for a hike through neatly marked trails. Take in gorgeous views of the Hudson. Explore the shimmering Swan Lake, then head back to the farm for some gourmet food at the Blue Hill Bakery.
What to do: Take a hike through the Rockefeller State Park Preserve. There are no maps of the trails provided at Stone Barns so be sure to print one out before you go. Stone Barns does provide maps of its property, and marks the trailhead for the Brook Trail. Walk through the vegetable garden (away from the main house and in the opposite direction of the parking lots) to find the trails. Take the Brook Trail to Swan Lake. If you’re feeling really energetic, tack on a stroll through the Overlook Loop and take in views of the Hudson.
Food, Glorious Food: The cafe is small, but absolutely excellent. Try their fresh, open-faced sandwiches with meats from the farm, with a side of home-grown vegetables. We had an open-faced roast beef sandwich, beet salad, and a whole wheat baguette stuffed with seasonal veggies (the perfect measure of salty, crisp and fluffy bread).
Sweets: The rotation of baked goods changes, but if they have the chocolate chip cookies, get one. They are the perfect measure of richness: somehow incredibly tasty but without the heavy greasiness of other exceptional cookies. Sit outside on the patio at a picnic table in the sun and enjoy. The cafe is open from 10:30 – 4:30, Wednesday – Sunday. On the weekends, the line can get long after 1 pm so plan accordingly – either go early or late.

Where: Blue Hill at Stone Barns (630 Bedford Road, Tarrytown, NY).
Train: Take Metro North from Grand Central to Tarrytown on the Hudson line (around 35 minutes). Catch a cab (waiting at the Tarrytown train station) and ride about 10 minutes to the farm.
Car: The drive takes 45 minutes from the city.
