Now in its 54th year, the San Francisco International Film Festival is the film event in the Bay Area, and possibly even the west coast. Each year, there’s some 100 films, a diverse mix of international, documentary, independent and short films with some star-studded vehicles, award ceremonies, panels and parties sprinkled in. It’s one of [...]
For 29 years, the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival has introduced, showcased and spotlighted the best in Asian cinema. It’s introduced now major filmmakers, like Jia Zhang-ke (who’s new film is in this year’s lineup), to local audiences and featured a particular region or forgotten director. This year’s festival opened last Thursday but [...]
San Francisco is home to dozens of film festivals, but amazingly enough, there isn’t a Green Film Festival. Until now that is. From March 3–6, the inaugural SF Green Film Festival will screen over seventy films and present workshops, panels and, of course, a few parties. All films will be shown at Landmark’s Embarcadero Center [...]
Now in its 13th year, SF Indiefest has consistently showcased some fiercely independent filmmaking that spans genres and tones at the Roxie Theater, just doors down from Monk’s Kettle. There are documentaries, local work, music films, thrillers, comedies, shorts of all kinds and the simply weird. Quality can definitely vary, but there’s something interesting and worthy about each selection. The Big Lebowski Party is often the hit of the festival, although this year’s Roller Disco and Love Bites: An 80’s Power Ballad Sing-A-Long are vying for top billing.
The Red Vic Movie House, next door to Alembic, is one of San Francisco’s true charmers. Indeed, the single-screen movie house, owned by a small collective of film-lovers, has been around since 1980, although only in its current location since 1991. In a city where independent, documentary and international films are thankfully easy to find, the Red Vic still stands out. It’s calendar is a mix of small release indies, cherished classics, documentaries of all kinds, cult favorites and the occasional blockbuster — reflecting a kind of refined, yet whimsical repertoire programming. This movie theater is full of surprises and fun.
Most Mondays, the Independent transforms into Cinema Drafthouse, showing movies that have recently been in theaters or are simply timeless. The selection is usually comedy or campy gore or, really, any movie that seems right for a club, like the recent screenings of Inception and Tron (the original).
“Nobody had ever done a movie about flowers before.” On October 14, Head to Dolores Park with a blanket and beers for Nicolas Cage playing opposite Nicolas Cage in Adaptation. Bi-Rite has everything you need for a great picnic, but the lines can be long on movie night so pick something up ahead of time.
