When you put “local” in your name, you better live up to your billing, and Local: Mission Eatery delivers the kind of local, humane, housemade, seasonal, artisanal, obsessively sourced and everything else that food lovers like us treasure. The menu changes regularly, but you can expect some sort of braised protein, probably pork, and some sort of grilled poultry, right now it’s quail. There’s always something interesting for vegetarians as well, like purple cauliflower cazuela or a persimmon, granny smith apple, dandelion greens salad.

The food at Local, which opened back in May and seems to have hit its stride, is fresh, and the open kitchen and friendly staff make for a communal, collective, home-style eating experience. And like any good home, dessert is not an afterthought. Cider poached pears, sticky persimmon pudding and a chocolate chip shortbread can be found there now, but like the entrees, the sweets switch with the seasons.

What else: Lunch and brunch are also done with finesse. Sandwiches are the thing, and the pulled pork with a cabbage slaw has deep, rich and savory flavor, while the cured sardine with pickled shallot is salty and moist. Again, vegetarians will be pleased with the roasted squash and braised kale with ricotta and chilis.

Getting there: Local: Mission Eatery is located at 3111 24th Street, just west of Folsom, a few doors down from Philz, where a post-meal pick-me-up is part of the experience. Local Eatery is just two blocks from the 24th Street BART. Parking can be tough, but the 48 goes right by.
