The Alembic, in the Upper Haight, takes the craft of mixing cocktails and serving food quite seriously, the kind of place where you know each drop and each morsel has been painstakingly prepared. Now it should be noted that an $11 Old Fashioned chasing a plate of bone barrow is not for everyone, but for the connoisseur who doesn’t mind paying to play, The Alembic is your Mecca. Foodwise, the crispy pork belly is legendary, but come with a group so you can also sample the fried oyster po’ boy sliders and the pickled beet and apple salad.
The Red Vic Movie House, next door to Alembic, is one of San Francisco’s true charmers. Indeed, the single-screen movie house, owned by a small collective of film-lovers, has been around since 1980, although only in its current location since 1991. In a city where independent, documentary and international films are thankfully easy to find, the Red Vic still stands out. It’s calendar is a mix of small release indies, cherished classics, documentaries of all kinds, cult favorites and the occasional blockbuster — reflecting a kind of refined, yet whimsical repertoire programming. This movie theater is full of surprises and fun.
