As even the most casual Bay Area hiker knows, Marin’s Mt. Tam is a blessing. The Stinson Beach/Steep Ravine loop is a classic Mt. Tam hike, showcasing some of the best scenery and views in the region. It’s the kind of hike that makes you marvel at living nearby. It’s a seven-mile loop, starting from the Matt Davis Trail head at Stinson Beach. The landscape changes as you move through various microclimates, and waterfalls and sweeping views await.
Sweeney Ridge, in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is a national park hidden in plain view just beyond the suburban streets of Pacifica. A short open terrain hike to the top of the ridge, and you’ll be on the very spot where Gaspar de Portola became the first European to lay eyes on the San Francisco Bay. Hike a little farther along the trail and you’ll discover the fascinating, if dilapidated, remains of the SF-51C Nike missile control facility.
