For the first few minutes, you’d be forgiven for thinking your directions were wrong. Park in a gravel lot off the main road, walk past a row of houses and down a wooded trail, and descend through switchbacks deeper into the forest. This couldn’t possibly be the right path, could it? Your patience during the [...]
The Rodeo Ave. exit off 101 is just minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s an exit you’ve driven by countless times. There’s no reason to stop, especially, as the road signs explain the exit doesn’t lead anywhere. Oh how wrong that is. The road does indeed end, but hop out of the car and make your way up and west, and soon the rolling hills of the Marin Headlands open up and you’re amidst at least a dozen shades of green.
As even the most casual Bay Area hiker knows, Marin’s Mt. Tam is a blessing. The Stinson Beach/Steep Ravine loop is a classic Mt. Tam hike, showcasing some of the best scenery and views in the region. It’s the kind of hike that makes you marvel at living nearby. It’s a seven-mile loop, starting from the Matt Davis Trail head at Stinson Beach. The landscape changes as you move through various microclimates, and waterfalls and sweeping views await.
Biking across the Golden Gate Bridge is on a lot of locals’ bucket lists. It’s one of those activities that you feel like you should do, that you want to do, but also make you feel like a tourist. And yet, once you do it, you want to go again. The bridge itself is iconic, the enduring image of San Francisco, majestic even when shrouded in fog, but catch it up close on a clear day and it’s otherworldly. Walking across it is fun too, although not much tops the exhilaration of seeing the Bay from a bike.
