Vesuvio Bar, in North Beach, is one of those classic San Francisco spots, a relic of the Beat generation that made this neighborhood such a treasure. Without knowing any of Vesuvio’s history, you’d still think it was a splendid dive. Reasonably priced drinks, friendly staff, a crew of regulars and two levels of seating. But [...]
For as delicious a food city as San Francisco, there is a surprising lack of really fantastic sandwiches. Sure there is Luca’s and Moishe’s Pippic and Rhea’s, and most people have a neighborhood spot that’s passable, but if we had our way, there would be a great sandwich on every corner. Macellato the Sandwich, which [...]
A San Francisco eating institution, House of Nanking has been firing up delicious Chinese food to throngs of people on the Financial District/North Beach/Chinatown border since 1988. The scene can sometimes be maddening: dozens of tables crammed into the dining room, narrow walkways, a suspicious number of staff bustling about, a suspicious number of staff [...]
Comstock Saloon came to town riding the wave of our collective craving for classic cocktails. San Francisco can be a tough critic, but Comstock has pedigree, co-founded by two of the Absinthe bartenders, whose quest to serve the most perfect prohibition-era drink can be tasted in every glass. It’s a throwback joint, designed to feel like a turn-of-the-century (1900s, that is) saloon with a long, mahogany bar, vintage paraphernalia, old-timey stools and high-backed wooden booths.
Now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, SF Sketchfest has not-so-quietly become San Francisco’s premier presenter of comedy. Each year, Sketchfest puts on a mix of stand-up, improv, sketches, tributes, screenings and anything in between that might get a laugh. There’s no true festival home, and events take place at comedy venues throughout the city, including the Punchline, Cobb’s and The Eureka Theatre, which is a few blocks from Comstock Saloon.
