The Alameda Point Antique Faire is one of those rare events that might just drag you out of bed at sunrise on a Sunday. This behemoth of the most comprehensive yard sale you’ve ever seen happens the first Sunday of every month, rain or shine, and is manned by crafters, specialty venders, hoarders of found objects, and the totally bizarre. It’s a must for anyone with a fondness for retro stylings or Mad Men accents, especially if you’re furnishing your apartment, looking for gifts or designing a set. If it’s sunny, which it often is in Alameda, the Faire makes for a great day.
Maybe it’s the early BART schedule, but sometimes Oakland can seem, um, a bridge too far. It’s a shame because there’s some really fantastic food there, for example Mua, which has been quietly serving up elegant home cooking like braised lamb cheeks, pork lettuce wraps with a spicy mustard seed sauce and feta cheese stuffed olives for a couple years now. Just blocks away from the Fox Theater and even closer to the Paramount, Mua is in the heart of Oakland’s Uptown, fast becoming a hub for Oakland’s foodies (and anyone else in the know).
Artists, art appreciators, fun lovers, the vaguely curious and the simply lost descend on Oakland’s (and Mua’s) Uptown neighborhood the first Friday of the month for Art Murmur Oakland. Some twenty-five galleries and cultural venues open their doors to showcase their work, providing a window into the current trends and thinking in Oakland art.
