A 16, on Chestnut Street in the Marina, is beloved by its neighborhood and attracts food lovers from throughout the city and beyond. It’s an unassuming treasure, a salty and olive-oily gift of San Francisco’s food scene. The food and the wine showcase Southern, Italy, the Compania region, and, in fact, A 16 is named [...]
It’s no secret that over the last few years San Francisco has become a truly great pizza city. Gourmet, foodie restaurants firing up thin crust pizzas with fresh, seasonal toppings that melt in your mouth are everywhere. But flashback to 2007, and it wasn’t so trendy. Which is partly why Gialina in Glen Park was [...]
Pizzeria Deflina is a tribute to the best pizzas from Naples and a delicious gift to the city. It’s been a Mission favorite since it opened in 2005, and when the Pacific Heights location opened a few years back, there was a collective exaltation of thanks. Even in a city that spoils us for gourmet, [...]
Family run Italian restaurants – you know, the kind of place where the tomato sauce is spicy, the pasta dishes are cheesy, the prices are affordable and the atmosphere is vaguely mobish – are hard to come by in San Francisco. But Il Borgo, nestled among much fancier fare in Hayes Valley, delivers warm, comforting and deeply satisfying Italian food cooked by Milan’s own Sergio Frigerio, whose recipes come straight from his mom. This is rustic cooking, and classics, like spaghetti carbonara and fettuccine Bolognese are done simply and traditionally, the way they’ve been prepared for years.
With its Monterey pines and views of rolling hills and the crisp, clear water in Drake’s Estero, the Sunset Beach hike in Point Reyes makes for an exquisite afternoon. Unlike a lot of hikes in this National Park, the wildlife, especially the birds, may just outnumber the hikers. Start at the Estero Trailhead and take in the rolling grasses, cross the wooden footbridge over Home Bay and, if starting later in the day, bask in the sun streaking through those pines.
Just when we thought San Francisco didn’t need another gourmet, thin-crust pizza place, in comes Ragazza, which opened back in October on Divisadero and serves up seasonal deliciousness. There are several pizzas to choose from, and you’ll want to try them all. The Wild Nettles with preserved lemon, red onion and provolone was salty, sweet, earthy and tart all in one; while the Moto with tomato, chilies, mushrooms and sausage was savory and spicy.
